Smart & Biggar named Canada’s Intellectual Property Litigation Firm of the Year and Mark Evans named Canada’s Trademark Litigator of the Year by Benchmark Canada
February 6, 2015

We are pleased to announce that Benchmark Canada has named Smart & Biggar as Canada’s Intellectual Property Litigation Firm of the Year, and Mark Evans as Canada's Trademark Litigator of the Year.

Smart & Biggar is the only firm in Canada to receive this prominent recognition, and this is the second consecutive year that Benchmark Canada has recognized Mark Evans as Canada’s Trademark Litigator of the Year. Mark first received this prominent recognition at the 2014 Benchmark Awards Gala (jointly with Francois Guay of our Montreal office), and was once again selected as the top trademark litigator in the country at last night’s Benchmark Awards Gala, held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Toronto on February 5, 2015. The awards honoured the best of the many prominent litigation practices listed in Benchmark Canada's fourth edition.

Benchmark Canada, the Canadian edition of Benchmark Litigation, has also honoured Smart & Biggar's Mark Biernacki, Gunars Gaikis, Steven Garland, Francois Guay, Sheldon Hamilton, Colin Ingram, Timothy Lo and Yoon Kang for their expertise in Intellectual Property litigation.

Smart & Biggar is a dominant force in intellectual property litigation. The firm routinely acts as successful counsel in Canada's most commercially important and technically complex intellectual property cases, and has also been recognized by The Legal 500 Canada as Canada's "Go-to firm for IP litigation" , Managing Intellectual Property as Canada's "Trademark Contentious Firm of the Year", and Chambers Global for having “a prolific reputation for its track record in trademark and patent application filings, with an equally strong profile for IP litigation”.

Benchmark Canada is dedicated to covering litigation practitioners and firms across Canada. The results presented in the Guide stem from the culmination of extensive peer reviews and interviews with Canadian litigators that take place over a four month research period. Over the course of the interviews, recent casework that has been handled by the firms is examined and sources are asked to offer their professional opinions on litigators practicing within their province or practice area(s) across the country.
