Rankings & Recognition
Best Lawyers in Canada names Smart & Biggar “Law Firm of the Year” for Intellectual Property
and recognizes 27 lawyers overall

August 28, 2017

Smart & Biggar is proud to announce that the firm was selected as the “Law Firm of the Year” for Intellectual Property in the 12th edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada, 2018. The firm also saw two of its partners individually recognized as “Lawyer of the Year” in the Ottawa region:  Steven Garland for Intellectual Property and David Schwartz for Biotechnology.

Best Lawyers recognition is based on peer review and awarded to lawyers who received the top score in their respective area – a true indicator of how much our colleagues are appreciated by their clients, and the legal community in general.  Recognition as “Law Firm of the Year” also confirms Smart & Biggar’s leadership role as the largest law firm focused exclusively on intellectual property and technology law in Canada.

Overall 27 lawyers from Smart & Biggar offices across Canada were honoured under five categories: Intellectual Property Law, Biotechnology Law, Information Technology Law, Technology Law, and Marketing & Advertising Law. Three of these Smart & Biggar lawyers were honoured for the first time:  Ekaterina Tsimberis, Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie and Mark Pidkowich.

Congratulations to all of our partners and associates recognized among the most influential lawyers in their field(s) of expertise by Best Lawyers

Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based entirely on peer review. The methodology is designed to capture the consensus opinions of leading lawyers who are asked to evaluate the professional abilities of their colleagues.

Best Lawyers awards "Law Firm of the Year" determined based on a handful of factors, including: feedback from lawyers recognized by Best Lawyers on individual lawyer and firm-wide work, the size and coverage of the firm in a specific practice area, historical analysis of the firm’s “Lawyer of the Year” awards in this area, and research surrounding the firm’s overall scope and areas of expertise.

"Lawyers of the Year" awards are offered in high-profile legal specialties in large legal communities. Only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is honoured based on particularly high ratings in these surveys by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity.
