Smart & Biggar hosts IP strategy for software masterclass for Ottawa tech start-ups
June 25, 2019

Jeff LeuschnerOn Wednesday, June 19th, Smart & Biggar hosted “IP Strategy for Software”, an IP Masterclass at Bayview Yards, for members of the Invest Ottawa community. Jeff Leuschner, a partner of Smart & Biggar, discussed the “IP toolkit” — the collection of intellectual property (IP) rights most applicable when evaluating the innovations of software companies — with a group of engaged tech entrepreneurs.

Under Jeff’s guidance, the class explored approaches to IP in software technology companies.  Jeff also examined how different innovations can be matched to different IP rights to further business objectives, whether the objective is freedom to innovate without being shut out by other market players, or to secure commercial exclusivity.

In our second year of partnership with Invest Ottawa, Smart & Biggar offers programs tailored to early stage start-ups, growing businesses and established entrepreneurs, including free monthly IP Clinics and quarterly IP Master Classes. These programs, offered onsite at Bayview Yards, are designed to help Ottawa companies understand the value of IP Strategy and how to be better leverage IP to scale up in a competitive market.
