In memory of Michael Wheeler
January 3, 2018

It is with sadness that we note the passing of our friend and partner, Michael Wheeler, on December 22, 2017.

Prior to his retirement in 2003, Mike practiced chemical patent agency with Smart & Biggar and Fetherstonhaugh for nearly 30 years. Like many Canadian patent agents of his generation, Mike started his professional career in the United Kingdom, and retained a wealth of knowledge of UK patent law and practice. Travelling to London on business with Mike, one could expect that dinner would be followed by a lengthy and energetic walking tour of the City, with a stop at the old Patent Office at 25 Southampton Buildings.

Mike was a patient and thoughtful practitioner, who shared his time generously with colleagues. Young associates could do no better than to draft a patent application under his tutelage. Mike would sit with them for hours, going over a specification, explaining the nuances of drafting technique and strategy. He was an early advocate of continuing education—now common in law firms—establishing monthly practice group meetings for our chemical patent practitioners that were soon mirrored in other areas of the firm.

In retirement, Mike carried on many of the outdoor pursuits such as hiking, camping, and sailing, that kept him active during his working career. Mike was fortunate to have a large and close family. One would often see him walking with his grandchildren in the Glebe, the neighbourhood where he lived near our Ottawa office.

A fine patent agent and a wonderful person, Mike will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
