Experienced IP professional with an international perspective and commercial mindset

Denis honed his skills in IP portfolio optimization as a Patent Attorney in London and Paris, both as in-house counsel and in private practice. His international perspective, commercial mindset and experience managing IP issues appeals to clients seeking to grow and capture value from their complex IP portfolios.               

A member of Smart & Biggar’s IP Strategy group, Denis advises clients in Europe, Asia and North America, drawing on his extensive experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, particularly in the areas of telecommunications, software, consumer electronics and medical devices. His successful prosecution track record includes representing clients in ex-parte hearings before the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office (EPO) and inter-partes proceedings before the Opposition Division of the EPO. In addition, Denis has prepared and consulted on patent invalidation actions before European courts.

Focused on increasing the value of IP portfolios

With his strategic, commercially-focused perspective, Denis has worked with growing companies looking to attract investment and increase their returns on IP investment as well as established, multinational companies seeking to strengthen their existing portfolios and assert their rights through litigation and licensing. His counsel is also valued by investors interested in backing innovative technology companies on either side of the Atlantic.

Private and public IP experience spanning London, Paris and Canada

Previously, as a Patent Attorney in London, Denis offered strategic counselling on significant initiatives including IP due diligence and valuation projects for private equity and venture capital investors. In Paris, as IP Counsel for Bell Labs, Denis focused on the creation and strategic exploitation of standard-essential patent rights in Europe and the United States. His experience at Bell Labs helps him understand and address the needs and challenges of corporate IP clients. Prior to being a Patent Attorney, Denis gained valuable insights and perspective as a Patent Examiner at both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO).
