Shahrzad Esmaili has over 10 years of experience in intellectual property law with a focus on patent prosecution and drafting for patent and design applications relating to electrical and computer inventions, including computer hardware and software, electronics, communications systems, biomedical devices, mechanical devices and consumer houseware products. She has specifically prosecuted applications related to business methods, telecommunications systems, cryptography, handheld computing devices, semiconductor devices, data visualization platforms, database management systems and network architectures. Shahrzad also has significant experience in drafting freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity opinions for clients in view of potential litigation issues.

Shahrzad is regularly involved in educating start-up clients in the Toronto and Waterloo communities on developing their intellectual property portfolios. Her strong technical background and expertise in computer and electrical engineering is a particular asset to her high-tech clients operating in these areas.

Prior to entering the patent field, her professional experience included developing optical network solutions for clients of a large telecommunications firm.

During her graduate studies, Shahrzad was awarded various academic honours, including the NSERC Post Graduate Scholarship and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship for high academic standing.
