His practice focusses on patent and industrial design protection of electrical, electronic and computer-related inventions in Canada, the United States and around the world. John has drafted and prosecuted patent applications for a variety of technologies, including communications, control, data acquisition, electrical power, pure software, and mechanical. Clients and colleagues have noted that John is a “great prosecutor” who has particular know-how in statutory subject-matter issues (IAM Patents 1000, 2017). He has also been lauded for his electronics experience and notably his background as a hardware design engineer that “enables him to chat with inventors in their own language” (IAM Patents 1000, 2018). John also provides advice on the establishment and maintenance of patent procurement programs and is active in training our junior professionals in the Vancouver office in patent agency.

Prior to joining the firm, John was a patent agent at another leading Vancouver law firm. Previously, he worked as a hardware design engineer and project leader for Dynapro Systems Inc., an affiliate of Allen-Bradley Corp. His main areas of industrial experience include hardware system and communication system design using the Intel 80XXX series microprocessor family, analog design for data acquisition, telephone switchboard installation and the inspection of electrical power utility apparatus.
