Biography
Peter Elyjiw is an associate in our Toronto office where he is responsible for drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the general areas of information technology, electronics, software, and mechanical devices. He is also involved with trade-mark prosecution and domain name matters.
With extensive experience practicing directly before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent & Trademark Office, Mr. Elyjiw has obtained patent rights for clients across a wide spectrum of technologies, including technologies pertaining to wireless communication devices, object-oriented software, consumer electronics, databases, markup languages (e.g. Extensible Markup Language or "XML") and children's toys. Mr. Elyjiw also provides opinions on the patentability of inventions and on patent validity and infringement.
Before joining Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh, Mr. Elyjiw spent five years working in industry as a computer engineer. His work experience includes several years spent developing submarine combat system software under a secret level security clearance.
Upon completion of his studies in law, Mr. Elyjiw was awarded a prize for achieving the highest cumulative mark in intellectual property courses.
Mr. Elyjiw is fluent in Ukrainian.
