Biography

Gunars Gaikis is a partner in our Toronto office. Mr. Gaikis focuses his practice on intellectual property rights litigation, with a particular emphasis on pharmaceutical patent and trade-mark litigation. He has appeared as counsel in numerous intellectual property cases in the Ontario, Federal and Supreme Courts and, for over 20 years, has been very active in intellectual property litigation for clients in the pharmaceutical industry.

As a licensed pharmacist, and having completed a residency program in clinical pharmacy, Mr. Gaikis is very familiar with medical and pharmaceutical matters, including the relevant regulatory issues. He has appeared as lead counsel in many cases involving pharmaceutical patent and trade-mark issues including proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Mr. Gaikis's efforts in these matters have been directed to representing pharmaceutical patentees against generic drug companies.

Mr. Gaikis has presented numerous talks to both the profession and industry on Canadian intellectual property law. He is recognized in the LEXPERT/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, the LEXPERT Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-border Litigation Lawyers in Canada and the Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory.
